Art and industry are often seen as mutually exclusive, but it wasn't always that way. In this modern myth, we learn the story of a nemesid named Adrastia Young -- one of the spirits of vengeance and retribution, partnered to a spirit of Good Order and a muse.
When Adrastia sees her partners grow closer to each other, she feels excluded. Her response doesn't just affect her relationships, but the world's relationship to the practical and the aesthetic from that point forward.
A story of the Mythology of the Modern World, which seeks to explain the mythological underpinnings of our world with a satirical and sometimes bittersweet bent.
Nemesid The Mythology of the Modern World eBook Eric BurnsWhite
This is an intriguing story taken from Burns-White's website, Banter Latte, where he writes a series of posts on "Mythology of the Modern World"--effectively, coming up with mythological explanations to explain various facets of modern life, just as the ancient Greeks and Romans did back in their day. This story explains why Art and Industry have such a hard time working together. It has to do with a romance between muses of Art and Industry, and one of their co-workers whose jealousy sent her into dark places.Burns-White has always been an excellent writer (full disclosure: he's also been a good friend of mine for some years), and he spins a marvelous tale here. This is very much the kind of story you could imagine the Greeks of old coming up with, if they'd lived in an era of modern technology.
My one problem with it is that it seems a bit short for costing $2.99 all by itself, when you could get plenty of novel-length self-published works for the same amount. But the choice of price point is understandable, given that $2.99 is the minimum cutoff for Amazon paying 70% instead of 35% royalties; I could wish they gave a better rate for a lower price.
Still, I'm not sorry I bought it. It was entirely worth reading, and I highly recommend it, as well as Burns-White's other works.
